About Tenant Farmer
This song was written in Israel while sitting in an archaeological registrar while listening to an old record from Thailand land. (artist unknown) Parts of the song really struck the cord with me. Playing on a green guitar that I picked up in Jerusalem earlier in the week I began to plunk out the notes for tenant farmer. The song really took off after I established the progression and the words, with a little work, flowed like water. At first the theme initially was not focused completely around a “tenant farmer”, However, as I continued on with the sound it really started to adapt and revolve around that theme. the progression is truly haunting I feel. When I think about the sun set in Israel and all the history that goes along with that territory, the concept of Exodus, and then stretching it all the way over to the U.S.’s history with the matter of servitude, slavery, and tenant farmers. There are very strong and dismal emotions that surface. However, there is a strange beauty that comes with it too which helps to create the song. The humming portion of the song, in its simplistic tone, along with its repetition parallels and helps to convey the theme Moreover, The concept of tenant farming has to be one of many upsetting facts of life and history To be a tenant farmer seems to me to have been a life style of continual defeat. After being enslaved, later emancipated, and then having no place to go afterwards, but back to your former master. the idea of being exposed to such a sequence of tragic events is a such a pathetic way of living. That idea really resinated with me, broke my heart, and created this song.
